🦋 Personality
- Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?
- What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? The obvious answer would be a siren, given Lucy Gray's affinity for music and song, but we're not doing that. Lucy Gray would without a doubt be a Yuki-Onna. Like the Yuki-Onna, Lucy Gray is an incredibly beautiful girl, and has "lived by her charms", but the true connection comes in her name. Lucy Gray is, per Covey traditions, named after a ballad and a color- in this case, the Wadsworth poem Lucy Gray, and the color Gray. The ballad tells the story of a young woman named Lucy Gray who went out into town for her parents as a winter storm came on. Lucy Gray never returns home, in the ballad, her footsteps vanishing into the night, leaving others to wonder what happened to the girl.
- If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
- Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react? A hundred years from now, Lucy Gray Baird's name will be forgotten. It was forgotten by the 50th Hunger Games, and wiped from the history books. It's quite likely that Coriolanus Snow was the last person alive to remember Lucy Gray Baird. But her music remains- that's one thing Lucy Gray can count on, is that even if she's a long forgotten memory, people know the words to the Hanging Tree. A song she wrote, with a hidden message meant only for Coriolanus Snow's ears, was used as battle cry by the very people looking to destroy him, heralded by a distant relative in Katniss Everdeen.
There are different types of magics in the world, and Lucy Gray believes in all of them. Covey culture values music and light and colors, and has all sorts of stories from their travels across the continent. Magic has always woven itself into these stories, and she's even heard of Fae before. But the magic she believes most in is music. Music has a power to transport you to anywhere in the world, make you feel emotions, either your own or those of the players. She and her family know how to use various herbs and plants to help heal, and will tell you to put some rosemary by your front door for protection. She knows a few rituals that the Covey used to perform, for luck, to try to see the future, to predict who'd they marry. Most people would call it a sort of folk-magic that has been lost in Panem. There were even tales of faeries who would snatch Covey babies up, spiriting them away and leaving their own children in their stead. Lucy Gray believes in magic, and anyone who's heard her sing would say magic believes in her, too.
But wait! The Yuki-Onna is supposed to lure men into the snow, what the hell? Well, Lucy Gray has had to lure people to their deaths before- one of the ways she survived her Hunger Games was by poisoning a water bottle and leaving them out for another to drink (this was an act that caused her great regret). Her passive survival skills echo the Yuki-Onna's MO quite well.
Lucy Gray is also capable of luring people in other ways. She uses her voice, like the Yuki-Onna and her magnetic personality to try to foster a relationship between herself and her audience. She gets people to know and trust her, and eventually, give up everything they've ever known for a chance to follow her into the wilderness for freedom.
Freedom. Lucy Gray was born free, and is one of the few Covey members who can still remember when they traveled freely from place to place performing. After the Rebellion, the Covey was stuck in District 12, and Lucy Gray watched her father be gunned down, and her mother beaten, in an attempt to keep their family together. Now for almost ten years, the remaining members of the Covey, all young adults and teenagers, have been forced to live in a place that is not their own, that they do not feel a deep connection to. They were forced to stay where they were when the fences went up, and Lucy Gray has not forgotten that. She remembers the taste of freedom, and she misses it. It's no wonder her first thought to protect herself was to run away, heading North. Lucy Gray was made for that wild life, and grows impatient when she's stuck in one place for too long. It becomes clear to her over the course of her Games and the time thereafter that there is nothing Lucy Gray values more than freedom, and she's willing to forgo everything for it. Even if it means death.
If Lucy Gray quietly slipped back into the world in hundreds of years, she'd be able to adapt. She'd come off as strange, she already knows she does, but she'd go right back to making music, smiling as she heard echoes of old songs she'd once dreamed up. But this time, she'd be able to go where she liked.
